You can do that, but the question is whether it makes sense. This will trigger the next automated processes: payment requests, calculation of returned direct debit fees, etc., which also need to be clarified and resolved. It would be more sensible to contact the debiting party first. You always have the option of reversing the payment if there are any issues with the refund.

If it's a direct debit, yes. You can easily reverse it even after the charge has been made. It's done with just a few clicks in online banking.
