Are there systems that automatically keep a boat on course in a certain direction?

I know there are GPS autopilots, of course. I'm wondering if there are simpler systems that adjust the steering accordingly when there's a deviation from the compass heading, so you simply drive in a specific direction (without GPS). The background is whether I can name such a system as an example of a PID controller.
