Study biology or computer science?
Hello everyone!
I'm 29 years old now and I'm faced with what I consider to be a very difficult decision. I'm very interested in biology (especially zoology, biodiversity, and nature conservation), and I enjoy it so much. But I'm also interested in computer science and enjoy it. When it comes to studying, I'd say I'd be better off at a technical college, and since biology is only taught at universities, that scares me a little. On top of that, it's always been my dream to do my master's degree abroad, particularly in Malaysian Borneo, where the diverse landscape has made an incredible impression on me. There are very good master's programs in biodiversity there, because the landscape simply allows it.
Now, to my dilemma. I'm incredibly afraid of not being able to secure a financially secure career in this field (nature conservation). Just thinking about studying biology and getting my master's degree, only to end up with no job prospects, is extremely demotivating.
On the other hand, I'm afraid that if I choose computer science, I'll end up barely seeing the light of day in everyday life because I've chosen a digital lifestyle where the job prospects are obviously much better.
Maybe someone here has experience in both of these industries and can help me overcome some of my fears or gain insights that I didn't have before.
Thanks in advance
Moin,
I have no experience in both industries, but I can tell you that you have incredibly good prospects for the future in IT.
It is simply because in the future IT will be increasingly moving into all companies and society.
It also looks much better in terms of content in the field of IT.
There are relatively few well-paid professions in the field of biology. The research is certainly interesting but for example to work in laboratories I introduce myself little enriching. For example, what I think about the fast would be bioteachers. But you have the least to do with biology in a practical sense. And you need to study this on teaching staff and make a lecturer, which just takes a very long time. And as far as I know, you have to do the Master to get into research. All the others are more helpful jobs I would say.
IT professionals are incredibly in demand. And with “only” you can reach a Bachelor’s very well paid places. For example, in the field of programming or software development.
And if you tell yourself that you’re better at colleges than in colleges, that would have answered for me. I wouldn’t want to torture myself at university through study if I fell on a bra.
And I’ll say if you get a “digital lifestyle” as you say, that’s more or less your personal attitude. You can also be active as an ITler in nature and travel to other countries to discover landscapes.
For me, the crucial point would simply be that biology does not provide a safe future. In my opinion.
I hope that helps you a little.
