Am I good enough to study music?
I'm currently considering studying music to become a primary school teacher and would like to know what you think my chances are.
I've been playing the harp for 9 1/2 years now. At the Bavarian high school I attended, music was my main subject. That meant we had it as often as math or German during the week. We also had to play two pieces every semester, which made up half of our written grade. I was very good at that and always got A's or B's. We were assessed on our constant improvement and on our performance itself. Harp lessons and daily practice were also part of the homework. For the first five years, my harp training was really consistent and extensive.
However, we then moved to Bremen, and there was no music department there. To be honest, the harp unfortunately fell into oblivion. I was so busy with school that I didn't even take any lessons for a good year and just played a lot for myself. Somehow, I just couldn't find a teacher I could work well with.
And now I'm in Finland doing an au pair year, so I haven't been able to play the harp for three months. But I can at least play the piano once or twice a week. I'm learning it as a stopgap measure, so to speak, because I'm deprived of music.
If I really decide to study music to become a primary school teacher, do you think I still have a chance?
I've always had a very good ear for music, and of course I'd practice, practice, practice. I'd also try to get some harp lessons here again and find a harp to practice on. But is there still room to catch up? I'd have to fly to Germany for the exam, so it would be a shame if it was for nothing…
And do you know if harp and piano work in combination at all?
Do you actually have to be able to sight-read, and if so, with both hands? I can actually do that on the piano, but it's harder on the hardwood… at least with both hands. I'd be happy to hear your answers…
For the primary school teacher, you need an entire teaching degree. Music is just a small part of it. Just music doesn’t work. Your knowledge should be enough, but harp cannot be studied everywhere, piano already…
Thank you. I would, of course, still study it with German combined in teaching, only for that I don’t have to go through the exam.
I don’t know. But I would first consider one of your places in which state you want to study music at primary school and then look at what there are for requirements and regulations. You can do that from Finland.
Either you are studying primary school or music and another subject at teaching school.
Music only doesn’t work for GS.
Yes Excuse me if I had put that incomprehensible. I would, of course, study a second subject and music at Lehramt.
We can’t know.
This will be decided by the Record test University.
