Application questions?

Hello community. I applied for a position six months ago. It's a small one. There were about 4,000 applicants for ten spots. I got a call saying my application was very interesting and that I was being added to the pool. Should I ask again to see how things are going? Is anything happening at all, or is this a rejection and just a way of keeping people waiting? I'm worried that if I ask, I'll be out of the running. That I'll seem impatient? Thanks.
