Better estimate distance?

Hello, I've been jumping for two years and I still have the problem of having trouble judging the distance to the jump. We've done a lot of pole and cavaletti work, but I still can't get any better. I always ride toward the jump and think to myself: Will it be far? Or close?

How’s the dressage work? What are you working on?
How do you warm up before the jump hour?

Are you riding your own horse or various horses? Is that horse on the leg? Can you get the rhythm? Also when you get up and take back? How do you move and how do you shorten in the gallop?
are you sitting soft and even in the gallop? Or have you ever felt outside the movement? Come to the hop?

Also may be a problem that you don’t have the horse just before the jump, but still in position as you came out of the curve. Put it straight, uniform pressure on both reins, and not only two gallop jumps before the jump but earlier.

Addendum: I just saw your question about a month ago about your attitude over the jump. You’re wrong. Before the movement, do not use your joints at all, so you are too stiff. If you sit on the horse so stiff when riding, you can’t feel right and disturb the horse in rhythm. It’s impossible to see distances.

Well, you don’t have to plan a lot until class A. A good horse is doing his job quite independently. A horse that doesn’t do his job on the level alone is inappropriate.
And more, rude, it doesn’t have to be for you. Welcome to the club… I am not able to give a glamorous performance when parking my small car – so there is no L-cours for my lack of talent in this respect. You don’t have to be able to 😉

Just enjoy smaller tasks in the course, and let yourself be taken carelessly from the horse. 😊

then you sit too much on the horse.

and you have modest jump lessons.

more than a small cross you jump only when you can gallop a row of 6 bars, a cavaletti row of 6 cavaletti can pick through and between two cavaletti placed far from each other exactly the number of gallop jumps that the trainer indicates.

If you don’t get it, you have to walk in the bar park until you have the distances on it.

if you have difficulty with the spatial imagination, you do not learn it at all.

Even if the riding instructor says, do so and so much gallop jumps – don’t use it much if he doesn’t call you if you want to shorten or give gas – because you can’t see how you need the frame of the horse to fit it. If after 2 years of intensive training one could still not develop a feeling, the talents are very likely to be different. (See my answer 🫣)

If it doesn’t work at Cavalettis, it doesn’t work at higher jumps.

Build 2 Cavalettis at a distance of 15 meters, then ride in between with 4, 5, 6 & 7 gallop jumps.

If this works, it works even at higher jumps.

Well, actually, the horse jumps… you just have to make it right… you should learn in good lessons…
