Broken leg while an intramedullary nail is in the bone?

Good morning,

About 2 years ago I had an intramedullary nail inserted because I had an open fracture in my lower leg bone.
What would happen if I broke my leg again while the intramedullary nail was still in the bone? Wouldn't it completely shatter the bone?

Thank you in advance

Moin,

that can’t be said. It depends on the type of implant, the localization and the accident mechanism that leads to the renewed fracture. It can also be that the implant fails and breaks. In some implants, this is more common than in others.

In general, periosteosynthetic fractures such as fractures around screws, plates or nails are more complicated and often have to be reconstructed and stabilized more complicatedly. The affected bone is therefore completely destroyed but not. However, the operation becomes more demanding and requires expertise. Something like that is usually an upper doctor’s intervention.

Is your question answered or is something open?

Love greeting

First, the nail should stabilize the bone, so that even more force from the outside is necessary for a renewed fracture than for a fracture of the unstabilized bone.

But yes, if you break the bone again at this point, the nail will certainly destroy. But I think that is unlikely. If you are not suffering from diseases that affect the stability of your bone, you should not worry.

You have to decide. Sometimes your own means of transportation is essential.
