Becoming a pilot with bad eyesight? ( with Lufthansa)

Hello, I want to become a pilot and in my opinion Lufthansa offers the best/cheapest training. However, I have pretty bad eyesight, -5.25 diopters, which is considerably more than the LH limit. Do I still have a chance with LH? Or if I were to have my eyes lasered, would that be considered “healthy”? Thanks in advance :))

Hello,

at the values you can forget it at LH. According to the new EASA regulations, up to +/-5.0 a single case check would have been possible by the LH and LBA.

Otherwise, the old values from the JAR-FCL 3 still apply, which was up to April 2013:
+5.0/-6.0 for the diopters, 2.0 dpt for astigmatism. So if you find an airline that strictly adheres to the new EASA regulation, you could be lucky.

Of course, you can also do a laser surgery. However, a certain residual corneal thickness must be present before the surgery and the refraction values must not exceed or below certain values. There are three types:

Lasek (Laser epithelial keratomileusis): Improvement of visual acuity, but limitation of visual quality (damping vision, light fading)

Lasik (Laser in situ Keratomileusis ): visual ability restored faster, less painful, higher complication rate

PRC (Photorefractive Keratectomie): Per Dioptrie 15 micrometer corneal ablation. Riskier, greater postoperative pain, longer healing time, but: Meets even the requirements of the Bundeswehr on combat pilots!

You can be advised by your ophthalmologist or a pilot with admission to Class 1 examinations (for professional pilots). You’re better off than here at GF.

Basically, no one can give you reliable information here. This is the only way to look at the requirements and apply for an airline. This is because the aeronautical physician or in the case of border cases of the medical service of the respective aeronautical authority decides. However, since the procedure is standardized throughout Europe, you are not limited to Germany. At LH, you’re above the company’s own values, but that doesn’t have to be the case with other airlines.

Just try it out if you meet the other formal criteria of EU Regulation 1178/2011. The law, for example, does not make any stipulations regarding school or vocational training, as both are not standardized in Europe. So, for example, it’s also possible without Abitur!

Good luck!

I can only give you the advice not to build your future on a surgical procedure. After this operation, your eyes are by no means healthier. In the best case, you will only become blind-sensitive (because your cornea gets thinner) and if what goes wrong (whatever can happen) then you can never get to the control of an aircraft. So either you’re looking for another airline (the ones in Korea don’t seem to have so high requirements) or make it more private with flying.

Hi, why don’t they seem to have such high demands in Korea? Do you have certain values for your eyes? I’d be interested.

Hi, no, you don’t have to, contrary to the national opinion. A visual error must only be correct – that, of course, within certain limits – but perfect (what does that mean) nothing has to be.

+/-3 Dpt. are maximum, all that is about it unfortunately is no longer going, but be not disappointed, I should not even drive with my -12 Dpt bus 😀

You have no chance with your eyes. But lasering is a possibility. There are also many conditions.

Here on the side of Lufthansa Flugschule Bremen you can make an online test if you are suitable

I believe up to +/-3 is ok, everything goes over/drunter. I think lasers are okay.

This should not be the problem rather the notes and the exclusion procedure should make DIr worry.

From this, you can do a laser surgery on your eyes, so you can see an eagle again without glasses.

It could just go.

Are you going? As a pilot can’t even be glasses wearer before all you won’t be allowed for training because you’ll be examined before

Hi, of course, spectacle wearers may also be a pilot. This also applies to beginners when they comply with the values specified in the law. It is easy to read in EU Regulation 1178/2011.
