Battery defective?
Hello, I have an 18650 battery with the following problem. I use it for a thermal imaging device and when I use the fully charged battery the device shows a full charge. If I turn the device off and then on again after a few hours the battery is usually half empty or even completely dead. Today after it was fully charged I measured the open circuit voltage with a multimeter. The battery then read 4.7V. So far so good. Then I put it in the thermal imaging device and left it on for a few minutes. Then pretty quickly (about 10 minutes) the battery was half empty according to the thermal imaging device. I took it out of the device and measured the open circuit voltage again. What surprised me was that the open circuit voltage rose from 4.7V to 6V. I don't think that's normal. But the battery wasn't warm either. After leaving it on the table for a few hours, the voltage dropped to 4.2V, and the battery was shown as full in the thermal imaging device, but then it was half empty again within a few minutes. The other batteries didn't have any problems. Can I assume that this battery is a bit damaged?
If a battery is “bad”, the internal resistance increases. Then the voltage drops when current is drawn and the device “thinks” then, the battery is empty.
The 6V is, of course, funny, that must not happen. There must be some “small” chemical processes inside to increase the tension so much.
So best get new batteries, which are not expensive and try out if the device works correctly. Dispose the old ones immediately (stick off the pole, battery collection box).
Hi.
the question would be how old the battery is. Had this fect with a cordless phone. I was crazy. Batteries exchanged, all right.
If, of course, the device or the charger could have a Macke, it sounds like battery for me.
P.S. just read your set “it works with the other batteries”.
You answered it yourself.
The battery is just half a year old. I’ll trade it before the heat imaging device gets hurt
Hi hstte just added something, since you had certainly read when all the other batteries go, it is clear the battery, throw it away.
