Backup hard drive?
Hello,
What should you look for when using an external hard drive as a backup or as a normal storage medium?
SSD or HDD?
When is a read-write rate good? At what rpm?
Are the €40-50 for 500GB to 1TB any good?

I would recommend only NAS-suitable plates (Ironwolf, WD Red, …). They are not much more expensive but are designed for 3 times the running performance.
HDDs have the advantage that they are quite predictable and usually warn one of the SMART values many months before the final failure!
SSDs are great for the operating system and for programs. The higher reading speed ensures that the system runs more liquid and faster. But SSDs are a pure "software construct". This means everything is now held together by the firmware – a software bug is enough and the SSD is out of stock without warning!
Therefore, I would edit SSDs for the system or as a data medium for current projects ( video editing, etc. ) and always take an HDD for long-term data storage!
For backup, an HDD is more sensitive. It doesn't come up with fast write access.
I'm not sure how to use it
In no case should you use a disk for backup and normal operation! Backup separately, and only connect when backup-relevant actions are pending.

yes, yes, yes
