Automatic as your first car?
Hello,
I recently got my driver's license and am now looking for a car. My dad says I should buy an automatic first, as I don't have to concentrate so much on the gears and instead focus more on the road. Once I'm more comfortable in traffic, I should buy a car with a manual transmission. Do you think that's a good idea or not?

Hello BlackDemo
That's not a good idea. You should start by driving a manual car until you're really good at driving and shifting gears. Then you can switch to an automatic. You won't forget how to drive a manual car.
If you start with an automatic right away, you will have problems driving a manual car again because you haven't had enough practice.

Thank you for the star
No, just buy one with a manual transmission. It's not that difficult. I think you'll learn it pretty quickly. Sure, it'll cut out a few times at first, but that doesn't happen to everyone. I think it's just stupid if you're used to an automatic and then want to switch. Besides, you might want a manual in six months, and then? Buy two cars in six months, or something?
In principle, I think it's a good idea and, unlike the majority of German drivers, I'm not fundamentally opposed to automatic transmission.
However, not all automatic transmissions are created equal. I highly recommend against automated manual transmissions like those found in the VW Lupo, Smart, Mercedes A-Class ("Autotronic"), and certain Mitsubishi Colts. They shift annoyingly slowly, sometimes jerk violently, and are sometimes vulnerable, especially fatal in used cars.
So, a classic torque converter automatic or a continuously variable CVT automatic.
Furthermore, at least here in the low mountain range, I appreciate the ability of our Subaru to manually shift gears in manual mode, like a Tiptronic. It would, of course, be better if the automatic transmission automatically recognized that we were going downhill and shifted down more smoothly.
1. In my opinion, manual should be a must unless you have some kind of disability. You should only buy an automatic if you drive a big limousine, have absolutely nothing on you or are a bit older.
2. Automatics consume more fuel because the gear ratio is different. For example, in older vehicles, the Toyota AE86 SR5 automatic only had 4 gears, thus a longer gear ratio. The GTS had a 5-speed manual, which meant a shorter gear ratio and shorter shift travel. This might be a bad example, but I couldn't think of anything else. It's a completely different story with newer vehicles; the whole thing is 9-speed automatic these days. 😀
3. Automatic is a real luxury when driving, you have to say, but for me it makes me lazy/tired/unfocused on long journeys because you hardly have to do anything.
4. You can have more fun with manual, for example when drifting. It works with automatic too, but it's not the same and nobody knows if the gearbox can handle it.
If there are any mistakes, please excuse me. I wrote all of this undertiredly. In short, Manuel is better.
1. There are also young people who like to drive with automatic transmission
2. Automatic transmission with dual clutch does not consume more than a manual transmission, but it shifts more precisely than any manual transmission
Manual transmission is difficult to learn after automatic you can no longer drive a manual transmission because you quickly forget it Manual transmission is good for long distances Automatic for the city
Don't let your father or (most) of the people answering here talk you into anything, and buy what you like. You won't forget how to shift gears, just like you won't forget how to swim, for example. I took the test back then in a manual. After that, I drove a dozen US cars, all automatic. Then a few manuals, and then automatics again. And most recently, after a long time, I've added a manual car to my fleet again. And it works wonderfully, and I shift gears as smoothly and seamlessly as in the best days.
That's a very good idea. Once you've driven an automatic, you won't want anything else; it's that convenient.
That's right
That's not so good
Anyone who drives an automatic without prior practice with a manual transmission will have massive problems if they ever find themselves in the situation where they have to drive with a manual transmission
You usually learn how to shift gears in driving school 🙂
Total nonsense.
If you can shift manually, do it!
I think 9999 out of 10,000 do it that way.
I did it that way, too. It'll work, so your parents shouldn't worry so much.
That should be the correct summary of your answer.
Great logic, respect!
No, currently 25% of all new registrations are equipped with an automatic transmission, and the total share of all vehicles with automatic transmissions is 12%, although dual-clutch transmissions, torque converter automatics, and CVTs haven't yet reached you. Or… you simply have no idea and have certainly never

I'm talking about novice drivers. And 9999 out of 10,000 novice drivers who pass their test with a manual transmission end up driving a manual. And yet, I know what I'm talking about. I'm also aware that automatics are great, but well, once you've driven an automatic, it'll always stay that way. Then she could have just gotten her automatic license. And yet, I've been driving for two years now. 🙂
Rather stupid. Once you learn how to use a manual transmission, you should stick with it, otherwise you'll quickly forget it after the test.
