Where to install Asus B550 M.2 SSD?
Hello, I have the ASUS B550-e Gaming and therefore two M.2 SSD slots. Only one of them runs on PCIE 4.0 and the other on 3.0. Unfortunately, I can't find anywhere which one runs on 4.0 and which on 3.0… (not even in the manual). Attached is a photo and a link to the motherboard.
Does the upper or lower support PCIE 4.0?

Thanks for your help! 🙂

The PCIe 4.0 support of certain AM4 processors can be used on the B550 motherboard. When a corresponding processor is used, the PCIe 4.0 support is then available only in the first M.2 slot and in the first and second PCIe x16 slot. This is the M.2 slot and the PCIe x16 slots closest to the processor.
However, only the first PCIe x16 slot is connected to the processor with all 16 PCIe Lanes, so that only this slot can use this PCIe Lanes exclusively. The second PCIe x16 slot is only a PCIe x16@x8 slot, since it is only connected with 8 PCIe Lanes, which the first PCIe x16 slot has to share with the second PCIe x16 slot. Therefore, both PCIe x16 slots only run in x8 mode when used together.
The remaining PCIe slots and the second M.2 slot are connected to the B550 chip, which in principle only provides PCIe 3.0 lanes.
The PCIe 4.0 support is available only if a Ryzen Series 3000 is used without G processor, or a Ryzen Series 5000 without G processor, with the exception of the Ryzen 5 5500.
With a Ryzen series 4000/4000G and series 5000G processor and with a Ryzen 5 5500, the B550 motherboard is also available in the first M.2 slot and the first two PCIe x16 slots, maximum up to PCIe 3.0 support.

The slot that is closest to the CPU should support PCIe 4.0. The other M.2 slot that is further away from the CPU is connected via the chipset and only runs PCIe 3.0.
