Are automatic scooters advantageous?

I own two automatic scooters myself (Daelim S300 and Honda Lead 100) because the weather protection is much better than on a motorcycle. In addition, the latter often have open-running chains, which are maintenance-intensive, whereas scooters almost always use encapsulated V-belts.

Nevertheless, these vehicles are technically suboptimal, to be honest. For two reasons:

  • The functionality of the transmission. This is almost always represented by a V-belt variator (CVT). The efficiency of such a design is extremely poor compared to a manual transmission, with a lot of energy being needlessly converted into heat. And as if that weren't suboptimal enough, centrifugally controlled versions are usually used, which allow little adjustment to the engine load. This means that whether you accelerate at 1/4 throttle or full throttle, the engine speeds differ only marginally. High revs and low load = poison for the engine's efficiency. Result: high fuel consumption.
  • The chassis design. Most scooters use so-called "swing arms." The engine, transmission, and exhaust form a single block, which is sprung as a single unit. High unsprung masses result in horrific ride comfort and poor cornering behavior. The Daelim, in particular, with its particularly heavy engine block (it has a DOHC engine with water cooling), wedges out at the rear, making it no longer fun. Only with the heaviest passenger possible does it become passable.
