Aquaponics=animal cruelty?

Hello everyone

A few days ago, I noticed something interesting on Pinterest. It was about small-scale aquaponics, which involves keeping fish in a small 1.5-2 liter glass jar with a few plants. It contained Betta fish. I've now read online that such a jar is much too small and that it's animal cruelty. So, I couldn't build something like that without feeling guilty. What do you think? Are there any fish species that would work with this?

In Southeast Asia, Betta splendens are drawn up by default in bottles up to the sales size, which at best have 1 liter of content. Amazingly, they develop normally under these conditions and do not show physical damage, or behavioral disorders.

However, if you look at what a Betta splendens all day, when it has a generally perceived environment as being art-friendly, it is noticeable that it is impossible in a bottle (or a single-mach glass) to live out its art-typical behavior. As it is generally assumed today that good animal husbandry means that the animal must behave in a typical manner, such mini-vessels are not suitable. At the minimum pool size, which is necessary for arttypical behavior, there are different opinions that start at 6dm2 floor space and do not stop at 18dm2. It is usually assumed that it should not be less than 9dm2.

I don’t know a species of fish that wants to live in such a puddle.

Put yourself in the position of the fish and see it in relation:

You live in a dixiklo you can never leave. There you eat, there you sleep, there you go to the toilet, etc. You rely on this dixiklo to be cleaned regularly, otherwise you can swim in your own legacy (word literally). You have enough space to turn around your own axis for your whole life. You’d go through someday, wouldn’t you?

Even fish like the fighting fish that should be kept alone need a lot more space, that is, 10 times. You need (all) at least 15-20L (more is always better) to live happily as these fish want to move.

Hi.

There is no clear line from which you can hold a Betta splendens. A vessel of 2 litres is enough to keep the fish alive under some conditions. However, freedom of movement is thirsty and it is a less robust system.

Basin from 20 litres are usually recommended. 40x25x25 better than 40 liters (e.g. 40x40x25, 45x30x30 oe) or 54 l (60x30x30) where the latter requires stable furniture.

Another problem is the Aquaponic system and its risks. Here you can also make mistakes that deteriorate the water. e.g. fertilized soil etc.

Look at this, I find quite funny. These are tiny 17 liters.

For 40x25x25 you can almost always find a place.

No, my opinion is that the freedom of movement is thus limited by far and the amount of water is not sufficient. It may be too bad that you would have to heat for a Betta. I would use a basin from at least 18 l (30×30×20), and I would recommend either 25l standard or 40 l special version.

I see it like that; No one forces you to hold the fish, a 25 or 40 l basin is reasonable, please use nothing smaller. They are pet animals, either be generous or forgot. There is no good reason to use a 5l pool. There is no good reason to keep the pool as small as possible.

5 l basins do not even belong to the standard basin sizes. They are suitable as snail vases.

I ran a 40x25x25 with a planted Sunsun backpack filter. The backpack filter is (instead of filter media) filled like a hydroculture vessel with expanded clay and there is a small pathiphyllum. Since in this filter the pump is not seated on the filter housing, but in the basin on the riser tube, the plant cannot root into the pump.

The basin itself is strongly and quickly planted and runs perfectly. Spathiphyllum grows too well. Unfortunately, I have to rinse the filter container regularly because it is much stronger with filter trough than expected. If the pathiphyllum is too large and I have to exchange it, I will try Siporax instead of blowing tone, then the water remains more throughflow cross-section than with expanded tone.

Fish can’t be kept in a small glass. Fish no matter what to keep in a small glass is animal torture and the fish do not survive long.

It’s too small and it’s animal torture.

that’s not just like a goldfish in the glass. That’s what I’m talking about.

Only a habitat of 15 to 20 cm3 can only be cruel to an animal.
