Do I have to reapply for the school bus pass after the end of the school year or does it continue "automatically"?

With me it's like I get 'automatic'. In my case, I already have them. But you can ask again at your school. Maybe it is different from school to school thinking but not

You have to ask for them again, because you have to prove that you're still going to school.
