Application test for developers. What can I expect?
Hey guys, due to a lot of personal changes, I'm currently looking for a new job as a software developer and consultant. A company I've applied to has a very fascinating application process. In two hours, they'll send me an email with a programming task that I have to solve within the hour. I've never experienced anything like this before, and it feels a bit like an exam.
I think the process is brilliant, as far as not buying a pig in a poke goes, but it also feels very… impersonal. No one will be watching the call or anything.
My question: Has anyone here experienced something like this? If so, how complex was the task?
Did you have any experience in this area?
Depending on the focus, you will have to assemble a little bit. Probably, however, are just a few logic tasks.
e.g. to develop a sorting algorithm in any language. That’s the classic.
The last time I had to write one in the university, also only to illustrate and understand for example Bubble or Quick Sort.
I’ve been enjoying experience, I’ve been on the move as a developer for more than 3 years and have developed for BMW until recently. I should have an elevator briefing at their application test. It was funny.
Look at the reviews on pages like Kununu. There is also something about the attitude test. Although not as a “spoiler”, you have a few statements about how difficult or easy the test is now.
I know elevator pitch. They are also common with us and are also taught further in the company.
But if you can develop, I wouldn’t worry.
Thank you. I am currently in contact with 3 other companies and was already invited to become a personal one in 2. Besides, I still have time until next year thanks to the cancellation agreement, so it’s not a pressure behind it.
Then don’t even see anything so negative. x)
Keep success!
Well, maybe you should write this because I tend to creative solutions 😂 na yes, so I could at least code a bit, and I did the job, maybe not as it was wanted, but considering that the previous and subsequent tasks were all related to C#, this was the logical approach for me. Should you report again I would like to make a diagram to show that I can also, I am a professional with Draw.io, if I can still sleep quietly considering how bad the Kununu reviews were.
Sounds to me now more like UML. x)
Well, I just used systems haha.
So the test looked like follows:
Insert a set of buzzwords around web design and programming into a meaningful text
Databases (was my time unfortunately)
Analyze a piece of C# Code and say why the ka#ke is
Explain the term refactoring and analyze pseudo code
Create a structure for a shipping trade (just honestly, no ahunng what exactly they wanted to see, I quickly pulled 70 lines of code out my fingers within 10 minutes representing the so ne structure in the program, also compiled)
And then still ne usability and design analysis for a Windows 98-esques overlay.
I would say that was a children’s game, but that depends on whether my solution is correct or not haha.
In two hours of sport.
If the job asks for ABAP, for example, it would be kind of stupid if someone gave some other language.
That’s why. I think that will have a reference to work.
And in the end, you will probably also say that libraries are not allowed.
yes they can read it but if a candidate submits the solution in 1000 lines x64-ASM code and the other in one line Python, this may be difficult to compare
You apply to one place, of course you know that. The tests are designed to be relevant to the job.
The “testers” are also developers. They can read something like that.
In the tests it is normally necessary to write only pseudocodes because the testers cannot know which programming languages are known or some also offer advantages over others (as an extreme example you could see Assembler and Python 😂)
I’d do the test anyway, after that you’ll have a test time in which you can draw the tear line at any time.
Is definitely demotivating to see.
But would do the test like that. This way you can take the test even more calmly, even if you didn’t want to do it anymore. 😉
Every experience is worth it.
45 reviews from the IT section of 45. Many bad reviews are from employees who had left the company, so could also be just review bombing. But it is noticeable, especially since the HR department attempts to justify virtually any bad notification. Hmmm… look, maybe I’m overwhelmed by the task so much that I’m not carved out of the right wood. 😅
Then I’d think about it again in your place.
But look at the sections. Of course, I don’t know what kind of business you have there, but in my case, for example, we are a business consultant house with a focus on SAP. We’re just a few developers. The evaluations are therefore virtually not representative.
Oh shit they’ve got a fucking rating there. 2.9 out of 5 stars, main point of criticism of lack of self-image, poor leadership level, rolling out responsibility and bad organization. Somehow I don’t have a ball on the test…
In any case, a lot of success.
My horses are also C# and C++ – but the work actually goes straight to JS and Python.
Then I’m calmed. I will prepare my IDE for a few other languages, especially Python, C and Java, with the hope that I can write C#/.Net, my horse
Assessments are impersonal.
It is sometimes the way to find out if you buy an air number or someone who really holds what he promises.
It’s about your professional skills. When they arrive, you look at your softskills.
By the way:
Such tasks can be well tested for plagiarism. So it’s not so hard to find out whether you’ve actually thought or stolen code.
On the other hand, I also like Ralph Siegel and I recommend you: The conductor has a limited number of tones. There’s some overlaps.
I didn’t have to steal from code, I can write well enough myself. I’m worried that in an hour I’m supposed to put a mammoth project on my feet, or that I’m called Blackout because of the stress, that’s my concern.
They can’t expect that.
But in the end, it could actually be that they just want to see how neat and effective you work under stress and it is not thought that you end the task.
Good attitude!
I can handle stress. My motto: Only under high pressure diamonds arise. 😁
Can be definitely unfamiliar to “separate the chaff from wheat”.
With many companies, especially at FAANG Companies, you have to count on an interview where you need to praise Live a problem. But, of course, come to the position in which you apply.
I’ve experienced similar things, one time there was something to be displayed in the data, one time it was a bit relatively simple in which you could simply make a rest api method that was a simple calculation, but you could further optimize the logic from the task.
Sometimes you get a (simple) semi-finished project or boilerplate code and have to incorporate a missing method or fix something.
Just classic little tasks.
I always do this as an employer. Task in advance to presort the applicants, and then before location nen half day to filter out fake attempts (was unfortunately it already). I don’t care about testimonials, I want to know what someone can do in the environment where he’s supposed to work.
