Afraid to get a mobile phone with a contract?
Hey, I'm 18 and don't have a job yet (I'm still in school and will be doing further training afterward, where I'll earn some money). Currently, I only receive my father's support (€389) and student loans (€276). I still live at home.
I wanted to get a new cell phone because my old one is dying. I found one with a contract for €25 for 24 months, and that sounds very appealing. However, I'm worried that I won't be able to pay it back at some point and I'll end up on Schufa's credit report.
What do you think about this? Is it sensible or too risky at the moment?
If you don’t have any revenue, why for heaven’s sake do you want to blame yourself voluntarily? Especially if there is no need to do so?
Mobile phones get little used or offered very cheap for purchase in the entry class.

Yes, it’s all cheap phones, but they work and how reviews show they are successfully used by many people. They fulfill the purpose and the rest of the buckling snack you have to afford.
Honestly? If you have 5€ in your pocket, you don’t buy a caviar and truffle for dinner, do you?
Prepaid by Penny, Norma, Kaufland, Lidl, Aldi etc. is perfect for you as a mobile phone.
They are now very cheap, you are not obliged to run and always pay in advance. You can’t get into the misery with the negative Schufa entry.
Let this go through your head.
There will certainly be times when you can afford more. At the moment, however, I see very different priorities with you. And you?
You’re right. I also decided not to do that with the contract
€25 to 24 months is a manageable sum.
You should just take care if you have any other rate payments, or book other options. Check out what costs you have in the month and see how much cash you have left at the end of the month.
It’s always good if from the almost 650 € (BAföG/Content) a month at least a little what remains and you don’t spend any more on how to eat.
How are your fixed costs? Are you paying for rent or money at home?
Otherwise, I would ask myself if it could not be a cheaper phone. I have a smartphone for almost 200-300 € with which I can do everything I need. And then it may not be necessary to pay for it.
But you must ultimately set the priorities and if you like the phone and the €25 in a month, it’s okay.
I have a total of 62€ per month (current contract with Simon Mobile 12€ and Germany ticket 50€). But you’re right, I think I’ll get one for 200-300. Clearly, the 25€ already clear, but I’m always super careful with that because I’m afraid something is going wrong
In general, it is always better if you can pay a sum directly, how to make rat purchases.
If you don’t have a big cost apart from the 62 Euros, you could also save 2-3 months and buy your phone with a sum. Or really keep a cheaper phone and save money for other things.
Loan money for a mobile phone from your parents/grandparents, and pay it monthly in rates.
That makes sense, there can’t be much wrong. Could you think about it?
