amplifier without head?
I'm planning to buy a 4×12 cabinet for my electric guitar soon, and I'd like to add a multi-effects unit to it. Do I need a head or not?

between effect device and box, you need an amplifier, otherwise nothing comes out of the box. The signal from the effect device is too weak to drive the loudspeaker box.
A top part would be the classic solution. There’s pre- and final stage in a case. Since most multi-effect devices are effectively preliminary stages and output a signal to line levels, you could also enter an output stage (power amplifier).
