Alternatives to the Kawasaki Ninja 650 (2017) for the A2 driving license?

Hi, I'll soon be getting my A2 license and wanted to buy a 2017 Kawasaki Ninja 650 (Performance). I've been looking at it for a while now and I think it's pretty good. My question is, are there any other bikes I could take a closer look at? It should look sporty but also be reasonably comfortable (ie, a (super)sport bike, not a naked bike or something similar), be around 650cc and cost around €8,000! It should also be throttleable for A2. Unfortunately, I don't know much about motorcycles or manufacturers, so I've only found bikes that look as good as the Kawasaki Ninja 650 but cost €15,000+. I would really appreciate some tips. PS: If you could tell me your opinion on the 2017 Ninja 650 (why you would recommend it or why not), that would be great too! Thanks in advance.

Hello Tobias,

You don't buy your motorcycle based on its appearance, but rather on its primary use and intended purpose.

Supersports bikes aren't really suitable for everyday use or even longer motorcycle tours. Sport tourers are more likely.

If you absolutely have to go for a super sports car, you should definitely test drive it extensively beforehand.

Your wrists, neck and back would thank you 😉

For the A2, in addition to the Ninja, these would be suitable:

  • Kawasaki ER-6F (predecessor of the Ninja 650)
  • Honda CBR650F
  • Honda CBR500R
  • Yamaha XJ6 Diversion F

That's it for the super sports cars.

Here are a few more sports tourers:

  • Suzuki GSF Bandit 650 S
  • Honda CBF600S
  • BMW F 800 GT
  • BMW F 800 ST (predecessor of the GT)
  • Yamaha Tracer 700

But there are a few more.

My recommendation to start with would be the Suzuki Bandit.

With fairing, also sporty but much more comfortable, available with ABS and also affordable.

Or the Yamaha XJ6 Diversion F. It lies somewhere between the two categories and is also more comfortable and affordable than the brand new ones.

I'd advise against the 300 cc minis. They'll always be running at the highest revs and constantly shifting gears.

best regards

Michael

possibly the CBR 650 F

It is super comfortable for a sports car and has 90 hp (can be throttled).

costs new with transfer but about 8900€

Otherwise, the CBR 500R has a somewhat sporty seating position, a 48 hp engine (unthrottled) but only a 2 cylinder…

Alternative suggestion for consideration

Buy a Ninja 300 used for two years – for about 4,000 euros.

In two years, you'll get your A and get your dream bike. If it's a 2017 Ninja 650, you'll probably get it for €5,000 to €6,000 and with few kilometers on the clock.

That's actually contradictory. You can't get your A license in two years, but you still want a machine that you won't be able to use to its full potential for years (!).

It has little to do with your weight. You should test drive the 300cc and then decide whether it's not enough power/torque for you.

By the way, the 650 weighs 30-35 kg more. 😉
