Clone old SSD to new one or reinstall?

Bon Giorno my dearest ones,

I've spent three years with my somewhat dated PC (GTX 670, DDR3 RAM, old Intel Xeon CPU, etc.). It's now time to replace it with a new PC with an RTX 2070, 8th Gen Intel i7, etc.

My problem is that I have some important programs and configurations saved on the old 220GB SSD, which I'm sure I could restore somehow, but which would be easier to clone. (Sorry for that high school-aged sentence.) I've already read a bit about the possibilities and risks of cloning, for example, that such hardware upgrades could result in Windows being reinstalled. However, I no longer have a key or anything similar for the old Windows.

In your opinion, what would be the best way to transfer as much data as possible to the new SSD without any hassle? Would you simply clone the drive? Or reinstall everything?

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your answers 🙂

Hello,

I personally recommend installing everything completely. That’s much more up, so I agree with you. However, you have a fresh start and will also get rid of certain old loads. And so you avoid any incompatibility or similar.

Take previous Windows key you could read out. There are plenty of freeware tools for this. But you can buy a new one for €15. You can just try cloning. If it doesn’t work, you can still reinstall.

You can prepare a USB stick for installation beforehand.
