Work as a programmer and study at the same time?
Hello,
I graduated from HTL Computer Science this year with a Matura and would like to work part-time/full-time as a programmer and study at the same time (it doesn't necessarily have to be computer science).
Do you have any experience with this? Would you recommend/disrecommend such a venture?
It’s possible. I had two employers for whom I programmed (for which I still develop) while I studied. Flexibility from the employer is important. If a pensum is to be achieved, tasks are to be worked out within a certain period of time which can also wait a little, then the employer could be positively opposed. Younger employers could be more flexible and in view of the fact that IT specialists are looking for, the employee would have an advantageous negotiating position. The employer could then pay for the actual time or at work contract basis when the work was done and corresponds to what he imagines. What else can be that he wants to arrange fixed times and minimum hours.
Part-time (until, let’s say, 20h a week on average) is good as long as you are flexible in working hours. So many.
More working time is only realistic if the study is specifically designed for professionals. FHs typically offer something more than university.
This is basically possible and also make some.
There is the possibility of a dual study, but then your subject must also fit into the workplace. You will also be paid for this, but it is not generally regulated how much you get. Depending on the altitude, you can even finance your entire study.
Working full time next to studying usually does not work. However, many work part-time. It is important to set priorities: either work adapts to study or studies work. If the job is to adapt to your studies, you need a more flexible job, because you have an appointment in the university where you have to show up.
But you have to remember that studying is suffering from work. Even if you can visit all courses with attendance: a job costs time and energy, which is still lacking in your studies. I don’t know anyone who worked next to the study and who did it in the regular period of study.
There are also courses in addition to which you can hardly work. I was 34 hours a week in courses, then had to learn and do tasks and internship in the holiday. I really would have been difficult to work next door. I then worked next to it, which I studied for longer.
My answer relates to Baden-Württemberg. You hadn’t written that you don’t want to study abroad, but you have to know that “Matura” might mean the questioner Austrians and thus Abi.
There are dual universities. You’re talking to a company like potential azubis. You don’t go to a vocational school, but to a dual university. Prerequisite is (special) abi (no idea how it is with extra degrees). But it means you have to study exactly what you applied to the company.
Isn’t there anything in Austria?
