When does self-harm occur?

Hey

I have a question. I was talking to a friend at school today and somehow we got onto the topic of self-harm (I don't know how that happened), and she said that for her, it's only "real" self-harm when it leaves scars that are clearly visible or that last forever. I then said that some people don't do it that deeply and that means the scars are barely visible or not visible at all. Her opinion was that people who do that seem to just do it for attention.

I also do SV and I don't do it deeply (I'm generally very sensitive to pain which is why I do it). You can just see the white lines from SV. I'm kind of scared now that if she sees it, she'll think I'm only doing it for attention (which is definitely not the case!!!) because I wear t-shirts in the summer too, as I'm not ashamed of the scars.

What do you think of her statement and do you think she thinks I'm just doing it for attention if she finds out?
