Which cognac?

First of all, I would like to mention that I have no idea about expensive spirits.

A while ago, I drank what I believe to be Romanian cognac with some friends. We were all very surprised that it tasted almost completely of alcohol. Is it normal for cognacs to taste almost completely of alcohol?

We therefore plan to spend €100-200 on New Year's Eve and buy a good cognac. However, I wanted to know beforehand which cognacs are suitable for us. We are looking for something that doesn't taste strongly of alcohol and is rather sweet.
