Distributed Denial of Service.

This is how “distributed prevention of a service” is translated.

When you attack a service of several places at the same time, you are usually simply talking about sending large amounts of data, many connections or the like. It is a certain sub-species of the "Denial of Service" attacks, where it is simply about normal users not being able to continue using a service uninterruptedly.

Of course, you can do much more when you attack from a lot of computers than just one. Mostly, this is done via Bot networks, such as PCs or other Internet devices that have been hacked and can be centrally controlled for such attacks.

Too much should not be considered, in everyday life many do not understand the word anyway and use it wrongly if an attack comes from only one place or the like. Applies primarily to lay people and Script Kiddies.

In short, a DDoS is either an overload of the Internet speed of the target or a systematic overload of the hardware capacities.

These two types are divided into Application based and Volumetric.

Application-based:

Application therefore applications relate to the hardware (specific to the CPU) of the target. As many packages are shipped as possible, which cost the hardware as much power as possible. In this case, crashes or throttling can occur, which either slows down or even completely shoots the system.

Volumetric:

in Volumetric (volume based) attacks it is about using the internet supply (bandwidth) completely. Imagine a highway. This highway is designed for a maximum of 1 thousand cars per second (1000 mega bits per second) but not 300-100 cars per second drive along this road but 100,000 or even 1,000,000 cars. This means that there is a massive traffic jam, which causes the normal traffic to fall.

These are the 2 primary ways how a DDoS works.

Volumetric is usually used for poorly secured servers or home connections.

Application based is more likely to find the application on well secured but rather medium hardware capacity.

for Dedicated Servers, Volumetric (UDP) is usually used because the hardware simply stops too much to force it into the knees effectively with an application-based method.

A DDoS attack (Distributed Denial of Service) is a method in which an attacker tries to make an online service or website inaccessible by overloading the systems with a flood of internet traffic or to crash.

Imagine you're standing on a vault and answering questions – and then not one, two or three people come, but 100, 200 or 500, and they all want to talk to you and scream over each other and expect your attention. It's going so long until you run out screaming.

All just against a PC or Server until this can no longer process and crash the many requests / visits.
