Studying abroad with a disability or wheelchair – does anyone have experience?

Hey first of all 🙂

I'm very interested in spending some time abroad (eg, 5-6 months). The only "barrier" for me would be a physical disability or a wheelchair, which I rely on. I've already started researching the subject, but I've found few (mostly college-age) experiences from other students in my situation. What's your experience like?

  • For example, can I do physiotherapy, disability compensation at school, etc. there just as well?
  • Where and which program were you at?
  • Am I perhaps stuck with a family/school that is unable to cope with me?

Studying abroad with a disability or wheelchair – does anyone have any experience with this?

I would be very grateful!

I suppose you mean a student exchange? Then it will depend very much on what school you choose if it works. So I would definitely go through a professional brokerage! This is more expensive at first glance, but they can estimate exactly which schools are eligible for you. (The host parents are placed in Australia by the schools). However, they also take care of the paperwork and the journey that is a bit more complicated.

We went to our Asperger son about Hausch and Partner. They communicate in Canada, New Zealand and Australia. https://www.hauschundpartner.de/

My boy just wanted to go over for half a year. He has remained almost 2 1/2 years and graduated there.

Hello

A year abroad is in any case a good idea – and can also be done with handicap if you prepare it well. Find good experiences and tips here

best regards

Hello,

I can't share my own experience because I have no disability, but I suggest that you should definitely talk directly to the organizations. With regard to physiotherapy, it is a question of health insurance that the organizations usually conclude for exchange students. First of all, it should be clarified if your parents still have to close something for you and if so, how much it costs. When placing in family and school, you would then be determined from the usual procedure, and for you, a family and school would be specifically sought, which will not be overwhelmed with you, where housing and school buildings etc are also wheelchair-friendly etc., and where all parties will know exactly what they are getting into. I could imagine that this can't do any organization, so my advice to talk directly to the organizations.
