Looking for alternative repair services for MacBook – experiences and recommendations?

Hey community!

Unfortunately, I have a problem: Yesterday, while I was studying, my MacBook suddenly shut down, and the display wouldn't turn on again. I noticed that although the MacBook starts up in the background, it's making erratic noises, and the Touch Bar is no longer working. I have another MacBook with an Intel processor. Since I need a laptop every day, I need to get it repaired as soon as possible. I've heard that this can easily cost €800-1000 at the Apple Store. Unfortunately, I'm no longer under warranty. Of course, that's annoying, but I'll accept it in an emergency, since I bought the MacBook for around €3000 back then.

However, I wanted to ask again if anyone has experience with other alternative repair services? It's important to me that I give it to a reputable partner and not to some small, local shop that seems to be tackling this for the first time. If anyone here knows anything, I would be very grateful for an answer, including information about the price and, in particular, how long the repair takes on average. Of course, this depends on the damage. (A little info: I'm currently in Cologne.)

I've been considering buying a new MacBook from Apple and returning it within 14 days. I realize that's not the best way to do this, but I rely on it for both work and university. I think that should be possible, or does anyone here have different experiences?

Thank you!

Christoph

Even if your MacBook cost 3000€ at the time, I would think about a new acquisition if the repair costs are very high.

Just the MacBooks with M-Chip offer in many points some advantages compared to the Intel processors and for around the 1000€ you already get the MacBook Air with M1 or M2. But of course I don’t know your application, and maybe a MacBook Air wouldn’t be the right device for you.

As far as alternative repair services are concerned, I would google after your exact location + “MacBook Repair” and just look at the proposed workshops / shops. Often you can see at the websites whether Workshop XY is a serious third-party workshop or the cell phone shop around the corner. ;

There are PC specialist, which should be really good and has several branches throughout Germany. If I have seen this correctly, there is also a location of PC specialist in Cologne.

Thank you for your comment.

Yes, for more graphics-intensive tasks, a MacBook Pro with a fan is probably an advantage. Why not underestimate the MacBook Air’s.

I’m sure there are at least two, three good workshops in Cologne. You can look at the linked workshop and, of course, google a little. Reading reviews is always very important, especially the negative.

What model and year of construction? After that, it was possible to estimate whether a repair was worthwhile. The description after presumably HD defective.
