In der Regel haben albinotische Damhirsche eine normale Augenfarbe, Okulokutaner Albinismus Typ 2, der mit roten Augen einhergeht, ist bei Damhirschen sehr selten. Beim Albinismus sind die Melanozyten zwar vorhanden, aber unfähig, den Farbstoff Melanin zu bilden.
Leuzismus ist im Gegensatz dazu eine Defektmutation bei Tieren, die dazu führt, dass das Fell weiß und die darunterliegende Haut rosa ist, da die Haut keine Melanozyten (farbstoffbildende Zellen) enthält.
