Car key transponder defective?
I replaced the car key housing today, and in doing so, I destroyed the transponder. I now have the following problem: the immobilizer is activated, meaning the engine immediately shuts off when I try to start it. What can I do now? I have a second original VW key, it's for a 2001 Golf Mk4 1.4.
You'll need a new key.
However, there is no such thing as just buying and going.
The new key must be programmed first.
Is the second key not working?
But the second key works. Can I order a blank transponder from the internet and program it into the key?
Yes, you can do that too.
You won't be able to remove the immobilizer without a working key – it's supposed to be a kind of theft protection.
But you can also install a single transponder – this also needs to be trained.
I don't know exactly how this works with VW – it varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.
However, you usually need a diagnostic device to be able to program the key.
Do you have one?
If not: at VW, the training costs between 10 and 20 euros (Internet)

How does the transponder programming work? Do I need other devices for this, or are my two keys and car sufficient?
Go to VW, order a new key with a transponder, and then have everything programmed to your car using a diagnostic device.
Use the 2nd key
Just ask the locksmith?
You can also break the transponder in the 2 original VW keys, just to be on the safe side.
