Queues at clubs, how do they work?

Stupid question, but I just have no idea. I've never been to one, and I've never been to a party, unfortunately, so I wanted to know how they work. Sure, you queue up, but what's the point of getting in? Does it work if someone leaves the club, can someone else come in, or is the queue just there to slowly sort through the people to see who can and can't get in?

Depends on how you've already said, partly because the clubs are too full and partly because they just have to do after and after identification, etc.
