Car purchase in 2022: Which of the two selected combustion engines would be the more sensitive option?

Hello to the community.

I will probably buy a car in the first half of 2022, which is not an easy decision in the current phase of change in this industry.

The following options are available:

  • Hyundai i20 (2nd Gen./Facelift, 2018 , 1.2 L, 84 hp naturally aspirated, 5 gears) for 12,000 € or
  • Hyundai i20 (3rd gen., 2020 , 1.0 L, 100 hp turbo, 48 V mild hybrid, 6 gears) for €19,000.

Planned down payment: €5,000–€7,000. It definitely shouldn't be more expensive.

Please no discussions about brand, color, etc.!

Electric cars are out of the question, simply because of their brutal purchase prices. Otherwise, I'm not against electric cars. I'm just undecided. Is it worth buying a current gasoline car next year? I definitely want it to be comfortable and not too shabbily equipped, but I'm not someone who drives a lot of miles a year (more like 5,000–10,000 km) and absolutely has to spend every vacation abroad. I also generally treat my belongings very carefully and not too wastefully (I get a new smartphone every three to four years, and always used).

Since I can't buy a different car every seven years, things like depreciation, fuel consumption, and other maintenance costs play an important role. Which of the two cars might retain its value better? I know this is a bit of crystal ball gazing, but I'm hoping I can get some informed commentary on this long-term investment.

best regards

If you can't really answer this flat rate, of course a newer vehicle is almost always the better choice. Hyundai is a very good choice.

Look for a Toyota Yaris or Honda Jazz.
