When to downshift?

I'm currently getting my driver's license and everything's going great, but I'm not sure when I need to downshift. Any tips?

At the latest when the speed drops below 1000 or you need to speed up more performance.
You will notice if the car is not able to keep the gear at low speed. Or look at speed when it is close to 1000 rpm
If you're driving, you've got driving hours. There's a driving instructor sitting next to him who shows and explains everything. Is that different today?
