Buying a used car without papers and keys?
Hello! I'm looking at a car tomorrow (BMW e46) where all the keys and the documents (title and registration) are missing.
Can you think of anything I should pay particular attention to before purchasing?
And: is my approach after the purchase correct?
My battle plan so far:
I have the vehicle registration office fill out an affidavit stating that the letter is lost and take it to the registration office. I ask the seller to take a photo of their ID and enclose it. There, it is entered into a system with the VIN for two weeks, and they check to see if it has been reported stolen or is otherwise prohibited from registration. After the two weeks, if there is nothing in the registration office's system, I can request a new letter, which should arrive in four to six weeks. With the letter, I can have a new key copied at the dealer/repair shop (or make one myself beforehand using aftermarket keys and modules like the "Ak-90" [or something like that, I think], although I'm not really interested in that).
…then everything else as with any other vehicle without a TÜV and then I'm ready for the road 😁
I'm very curious to hear your opinions and tips. Even though I suspect many of you will say to leave it alone, saying the risk is too great.
I also have the tendency, especially since the E46 is a model that does not cost the world in good condition and probably accumulates a bunch of money until the candidate you have planned is ready to drive and TÜV capable. Keys are an expensive thing with BMW, and there's an immobilizer here and you can't, like for example with my Audi 80 in the key service or with Mister Minit, edit a blank – this will be expensive. The papers are a formal act, that is not a subject that you get regulated, that is routine for the authorities – had once interested me for an old five who came from an estate; the heirs did not find the letter – that was reputable, I knew the people and the car since the purchase by the deceased in the 90s, that would have gone all with certificate, I did not buy the car only for substantial defects.
However, if there is no more "nix" in a car, it doesn't show that someone insisted on it carefully and it will be. In the best case, this was a part carrier or a car standing in the hall for years (will be expensive at BMW, the spare parts long too); in the darkest case, it's stolen and then it's really going on with scissors.
Finally, you should be able to find a volume model such as the E46, which can be found at a distance of 100 kilometers without great effort, with suitable equipment, machine and color, and avoid such smiles as "car without papers and keys".

I can confirm that I did this for an acquaintance – an administrative act without problems, that was done with 20-30 euros and then the new letter was there.
Okay, thanks. I once lost my Golf 4 keys, which also had central sealing and I also had immobilizer and that only has approx. 200 euros. There is also the possibility to encode yourself with tutorials on YouTube. That's why I'm not completely dismissed.
Don't buy it. He's stolen. No person loses both keys + vehicle papers.
The ID you want to take off will be 100% fake!
