Food in the mouth when swallowing?

There's a space beneath the tonsils. What happens to food when you swallow? Does anything get in there? Does it come out on its own?

I've never thought about it before, but since I've had deep-seated tonsil stones that can't be removed, I constantly have the feeling that food is accumulating there.
