He can probably read light books. Try it or “paint”. Card games. Music, audio games, etc.

With 9 years more than “light books” should also go if there is not a reading weakness. I’ve read Harry Potter at 8/9 years.

Right. I was also more of a language type or rather reader than non-reader. It must be something he/she enjoys. we don’t know the bubble.
