2 fish and many snails dead – What happened?
Hello to everyone who knows about small ponds.
I have had a pond with bitterlings and snails for many years.
Unfortunately, two fish died yesterday after swimming at the surface for a long time, often breathing heavily and showing little/no escape reflex.
I separated them yesterday.
Now all the marsh snails are swimming on top and the 2 fish still remaining in the pond are swimming slowly on the surface.
What can I do?
The pond has a bubbler, many green plants, a small fountain and two water lilies.
I replaced 1/4 of the water with tap water and added an additional fountain pump. After testing strips (JBL EasyTest 6in1), the water is OK.
The now dead fish had no external abnormalities.
1 still swimming fish has a white mouth.
What can I do????
Hello,
Well, bitters become ~5 years old, but that the snails seem to want to leave the pond also indicates bad water quality, so it is in the aquarium!
These test strips are very inaccurate and therefore do not mean “Ratestäbchen”! I don’t know how big the pond is, but you should exchange at least 3/4 of the water when the problem has solved it, you’ll have to continue this for a few days!
It must have been some poisoning.
Perhaps the water is tilted or it has too little oxygen.
