2 € coin Greece with S in a star?
I have a Greek €2 coin here that looks pretty unused. I can see an "S" in the star between the year. Is there something special about this coin, or is it simply a €2 coin? I haven't noticed this on a regular Greek €2 coin.
With the introduction of the euro in 2002 as a means of payment, some million coins had to be coined.
At that time, however, Greece was unable to shape a sufficient amount of coins. Finland has therefore agreed to help.
For the 2 euro coins, this was almost half of all the embossments. That means that 70 million 2-Euro coins were taken over by Finland and 75 million from Greece.
To distinguish which coin was coined in which embossing place, the “S” for Suomi in the lower star was embossed in the Finnish coins.
The ratio of 75 million to 70 million is almost 50:50 that a Greek 2-Euro coin from 2002 has the “S” in the lower star.
The “S” is the symbol of the coins coined on behalf of Greece in Finland (“Suomi”).
This is an interesting detail, but not more. The value is 2 euros.
A normal 2 Euro coin
This is for Suomi (Finland). Because Greece has given some coins to Finland.
